Reading to Improve Your Spanish

There is no doubt that reading is fundamental in the process of learning Spanish.  At Expanish we want to make sure that our students take full advantage of their experience, so we have recently opened up our very own Spanish library.  This way, students will be able to take advantage of all the benefits reading in a foreign language.  Here are just a few:

Increase Your Vocabulary

Reading will constantly expose you to new words.  It is not necessary to always look them up in the dictionary as many times our brains deduce the definitions of new words by the context they are in without using a reference book.  Not only learning new words, but reading helps to review words that you have already learned and fortifies them in your memory so as to make them part of your own day-to-day vocabulary.

Improve Your Grammar

Reading allows you to see all the diverse grammatical structures that you learn in class, giving you great fluidity in your use of the language.  In this way, you can see the many common uses of the different tenses in action and not to be limited by patterns that occur in many regular Spanish textbooks.

Help Your Writing

Writing is one of the hardest areas for most students.  Reading can actual help in the writing process as the more you read complex structures, the more you will incorporate them and reproduce them when it comes time to write on your own.  Just like in your native language, if you read frequently, you will realize that writing will come to you much easier.

Enrich Your Oral Expression

As for oral expression, it will allow you to improve the different ways to communicate and give you a wide variety of phrases to use.  Reading improves the ability to transmit through speaking with more precision, clarity and coherence, and at the same time understand those speaking to you.

It Keeps You Informed

It is important to read different texts from magazines, newspapers, literary works and even comics.  It will not only keep you informed and up-to-date with, but it will also increase your cultural understanding.

It Helps You Form Opinions

Although not always in a conscious manner, the act of reading helps you establish concepts, judgments and reasoning since you will be constantly interacting with the author´s and your own worldview.  It pushes you towards being an autonomous and independent reader as you gain your own critical voice.

As you can see, there are many benefits to practice your reading in Spanish.  For this reason we invite all of our students to visit our new library on the 6th floor where they can spend time reading and even check out one of the over 100 books to read at home!
