Incredible Places to Visit in Buenos Aires While Studying Spanish
Buenos Aires offers an abundance of cultural activities and places to see. But if you want to make the most out of your time studying Spanish in Buenos Aires, be sure to visit a few of these incredible places.
1. Tigre
In need of a nice “retiro” or break from the city life? A day trip to the river delta town of Tigre just an hour north of the city and easily accessible by train ride is exactly where to head. Consisting of numerous tiny islands and waterways, it’s a great place to rent kayaks or navigate by boat. Even just a quick day trip will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to take on city life again.
2. Los Bosques
If you want some greenery a little closer to the city, Los Bosques park in Palermo is a wonderful way to pass some time in the sun, exercise, or meet up with friends to share mate and a picnic. The park is centrally located and the destination for porteños on sunny days and weekends. Plenty of the restaurants are located under the train bridge bordering the park, I recommend getting some friends together and head to the beer garden on a sunny afternoon to practice your Spanish!
3. San Telmo’s Sunday Market
A visit to Buenos Aires’ oldest barrio of San Telmo feels like immersing yourself in the history of Argentina. Come here on a Sunday morning and walk the open-air market to buy souvenirs from local artists and vendors. Walking along the stalls and vendors of Calle Defensa you get a true sense of how eclectic and vibrant this barrio is.
4. Palermo at night
With shops and sidewalk cafes on almost every corner, the barrios of Palermo always have something to offer. However, once the sun sets, Palermo comes alive with the nightlife Buenos Aires is so famous for. Have dinner at one of the many prominent parrillas in Palermo, follow it up with finely crafted cocktails at a local bar, and finish your night dancing until dawn at a “boliche” or nightclub, with all your friends.
5. Recoleta Cemetery
It’s impossible to talk about places to visit in Buenos Aires and not mention the Recoleta Cemetery. The historic cemetery in the heart of Buenos Aires’ ritzy Recoleta neighborhood is a must visit. Walking through the dense rows of mausoleums and tombs, its somber beauty will leave you awe-inspired. Make a day out of it and check out the open-air market next door in Plaza Francia, the feria of Recoleta is open every weekend and on holidays.
6. Teatro Colon
More than a hundred years old, the famous opera house is considered one of the best concert venues in the world. Not only does the theater have perfect acoustics, but the ornate marble and granite lobby is also absolutely captivating. It’s no wonder Teatro Colon is ranked among the finest in the world. Take a guided tour or get some culture and go see a show, a visit to the theater is a must in Buenos Aires.
7. Mar de Plata
Okay, so it’s not technically in the city of Buenos Aires, BUT it is in the province of Buenos Aires so it counts! Mar del Plata is a popular beachside summer destination amongst porteños escaping the city heat. Four hours by car to the south it makes for a perfect road trip with friends for a weekend getaway.
