Why Lifelong Learners Are Choosing Malaga for Spanish Immersion
It’s never too late to learn a language. Taking an immersive Spanish course aimed exclusively for mature students is a great way to travel, make meaningful cultural connections and meet other like-minded people. We spoke to some of our 50+ students at Expanish Malaga about their experiences.

For many adults over 50, the idea of taking on a new language can feel both exciting and daunting. Yet more and more mature learners are embracing the challenge, driven by curiosity and a desire for meaningful travel. Moreover, research consistently highlights that learning a new language supports cognitive engagement, improves memory, and encourages mental flexibility. Importantly, adults often bring strong learning strategies and real-world experience to the classroom, enabling them to progress effectively even when they believe younger learners have an edge.
Spanish, with its global reach and cultural richness, is an especially popular choice. And increasingly, Malaga is emerging as a destination of choice for those who want to learn in an environment tailored to mature students—one that is immersive, supportive, and shared with peers who value purposeful travel.
Jan, 53, from Norway, says he was surprised by the warmth of the locals in Malaga. "The malagueños are really open and not pretentious at all, and the rhythm of life here is really relaxed - I love the atmosphere." Jan, who is taking evening classes at Expanish Malaga, says he's looking forward to further improving his Spanish skills and integrating himself into local life.
Tim, 61, from Melbourne, Australia, says he wanted “to do something constructive” while in Malaga, not simply pass through the city as a holidaymaker. Joining an intensive group course at Expanish, he says he found the combination of structured learning and immersive cultural activities, such as visiting the Roman Theatre, far more rewarding than studying solely from a book. “It gets you out of the classroom,” he said, “and allows you to meet other classmates that you might not have had a conversation with otherwise.”

A learning experience beyond the classroom
A key hallmark of all Expanish programs is the integration of cultural activities that complement classroom learning. These experiences help students use Spanish in authentic environments and form strong bonds with classmates while exploring the region.
Allison describes the flamenco show, cooking class, and catamaran outing as highlights. Ferdi’s favourite experience was hiking the famous Caminito del Rey with the group. These cultural activities create memorable moments that reinforce learning in a relaxed, social setting.

Overcoming hesitation and discovering confidence
Several of our 50+ students admit that they were initially hesitant, particularly about returning to the classroom or travelling alone, but then quickly found that they had no reason to worry.
At 66, Allison had not travelled solo for many years and was somewhat nervous about doing it again. She was persuaded to come to Malaga for a two-week course by her family. By the end of it, her perspective had transformed: “It’s been absolutely fabulous… I’d say to others: jump right in.” Ferdi offers similar encouragement: “Very often, at our age we can be hesitant, but in the end I’m happy I did it and I think most people should just do it.”
Tim, who was studying in a mixed-age group including younger students, also emphasises the importance of stepping outside one’s comfort zone. Despite the challenges of grammar, speaking, and comparing his level to others, he says never felt judged and found the experience well worth it. Jan agrees: "I would say you should come eager to learn and without the fear of making mistakes - Malaga and Expanish are really pleasant places to learn Spanish."
A meaningful way to engage with Spain
For lifelong learners seeking more than tourism, Malaga offers a balanced blend of personal challenge, cultural immersion, and community. It proves that it is never too late to learn a new language—not only because adults are capable of significant progress, but because the experience itself is enriching, confidence-building, and deeply rewarding.
As Allison puts it simply: “I’m going to keep on going.”
Expanish now offers dedicated 50+ programs at all its schools - Malaga, Barcelona, Madrid and Buenos Aires (Argentina). The two week programs are available twice a year. For course dates and more information, check our website.
