Top 5 Lessons I Learned From Studying Abroad
NYU student Scandra Ortega talks about her personal experiences and key lessons learned during her semester in Madrid studying Marketing & Entrepreneurship and interning with Expanish.

Studying abroad is one of those experiences that people always say will change you and I can tell you, it really does. Perhaps not always in big, obvious ways, but more so in how you think, how you approach new situations, and how you see the world. Living in a new country and being surrounded by a different culture pushes you out of your comfort zone in the best way possible. Looking back, these are the five biggest lessons I learned from my semester in Madrid.
1. Not everything will go as planned and that’s part of the experience
One of the first things I learned is that not everything is going to be perfectly planned, and that’s okay. In fact, some of the best moments come from things not going according to plan. You never know when you’ll have the chance to experience certain moments again, so it’s important to take advantage of being abroad and all the opportunities that come with it. Some of my favorite memories came from last-minute plans, spontaneous trips, or just saying yes without overthinking it. Those are the experiences I still talk about with my friends all the time.
2. Say yes more
This might sound simple, but it’s honestly one of the most important lessons. Say yes to plans, to trips, to meeting new people, and to trying new things even when it feels a little uncomfortable. It’s easy to stay in your routine or say no because you’re tired or unsure, but some of the best experiences come from stepping outside of that. Studying abroad doesn’t last forever, so saying yes more often is what makes the experience feel full and memorable.

3. You'll become more independent than you expect
Being in a new country forces you to figure things out on your own. Whether it’s navigating transportation, dealing with a language barrier, or handling unexpected situations, you quickly learn how to rely on yourself. At first, it can feel overwhelming, but over time it builds a lot of confidence. Things that once felt stressful start to feel normal, and you realize how much more independent you’ve become.
4. You don’t need a perfect plan
Before going abroad, it’s easy to think everything needs to be planned out. But one of the biggest lessons I learned is that you don’t need a perfect itinerary to have an amazing experience. Some of the best weekends happen when you book something last minute or just go with the flow. Learning to be flexible and not over-plan everything makes the experience a lot more enjoyable and a lot less stressful.
5. The little moments matter the most
While traveling and big experiences are amazing, some of the best parts of studying abroad are actually the smaller, everyday moments. Things like walking around your city, grabbing coffee, sitting in a park, or just spending time with friends become some of your favorite memories. Those moments are what make your experience feel real, and they’re often the ones you miss the most when it’s over.
Studying abroad is so much more than just traveling or taking classes in a different country. It’s an experience that helps you grow, become more confident, and see things in a new way. Everyone’s experience will look different, but the lessons you take away from it stay with you long after you leave. It’s one of those experiences that you don’t fully understand until you go through it but once you do, you realize how much it changes you.
